Campervan rental reviews: what public complaints say
Before booking, most people look up reviews of the rental company. We have read and classified 293 public complaints about two campervan rental companies that operate in several European countries. This is what comes up again and again, and how to read reviews before you book.
Figures calculated on 13 October 2026 from 293 public complaints published on Altroconsumo, DECO PROteste, OCU, Portal da Queixa, Test-Aankoop, indiecampersopiniones.com. These are complaint platforms: they collect problems, not satisfaction, and the samples differ in size and country, so they cannot be used to rank companies. How we classify each complaint: methodology.
What repeats in the complaints
Share of complaints in each sample that mention each issue. A complaint can mention several issues.
The full summary for each company, with its own documents and conditions: Indie Campers reviews and Roadsurfer reviews.
Did the company reply?
On OCU, DECO PROteste, Altroconsumo, Test-Aankoop and Portal da Queixa the company can answer each complaint. Of the complaints in our samples published on those platforms, Indie Campers replied publicly to 32% and Roadsurfer to 72% (complaints where we could check it; almost all of the Roadsurfer sample comes from OCU). A reply does not mean the case was solved, but it tells you whether there is someone to talk to.
How to read reviews before you book
- Look at the specific location. The same company can work very differently from one base to another. Check the reviews of the base where you will pick up the vehicle: map of locations.
- Look at the date. Conditions change: a complaint from two years ago may describe rules that no longer apply, or the opposite.
- Separate the trip from the after-trip. Many positive reviews are written on the day of return. Damage charges, if any, often arrive weeks later, so check whether there are complaints about what happened after the return.
- On peer-to-peer platforms, separate platform and owner. On sites where private owners rent out their vans, a complaint may be about the owner, the platform or the insurer. They are not the same.
- Read the conditions, not just the reviews. What the contract says about damage, deposit and deadlines decides what you can claim later. See our guide to insurance and excess.
