Breakdowns and faults: 6 of 15 (40%)
- A family with two small children says, in an Altroconsumo complaint from September 2026, that the camper was handed over hours late and would not start that same evening because of the battery. According to the customer, the fault came back in Belgium and was only solved when the battery was replaced at a company location. Status on the platform: ongoing.
- A customer on OCU (October 2026) says a fault warning light came on from the start, that the company said they could continue and later told them to stop the vehicle. The customer says they waited about 24 hours for a tow truck that did not arrive. The company replied on the platform on 8 October 2026 that the compensation request was under review.
- Another customer describes, on indiecampersopiniones.com (8 October 2026), a tap that leaked a few kilometres after pick-up; they went back and, they say, it was sorted out after they insisted. Another, in a comment from September 2025, mentions an interior water leak and a loss of engine power.
Charges for damage after the return: 7 of 15 (47%), 6 separate cases
This is the topic for which Indie Campers is a featured case on this website, so we cover it in detail.
- A customer who rented in February 2026 says, on Altroconsumo and on Portal da Queixa (two texts with almost identical content, probably the same case), that the staff at the return pointed out nothing and that four days later they learned of a charge of about 950 euros to the deposit for damage to the front, after an internal review. The Altroconsumo complaint is marked as resolved; the Portal da Queixa one as unresolved.
- A customer on OCU (30 August 2026) says they returned the vehicle on 21 August 2026 with no joint inspection, that the damage report was generated on 23 August with pick-up photos dated a day before their actual pick-up, and that they were charged 562.77 euros for three scratches (500 euros from the deposit and 62.77 euros on their card), despite having the premium protection. Status: resolved.
- A customer on indiecampersopiniones.com (September 2025) describes a charge of 199 euros three weeks after the hand-over for a scratch near the driver's door, in an area with other earlier scratches, and says they asked for weeks for the original images.
- A customer on OCU (November 2024) says that at the return, in October 2024, staff confirmed there were no differences from the hand-over, and that a week later the company notified them of damage, with a photo of what appears to be a scratch on the right side, and kept 1,060 euros of the deposit. Status: closed; no reply from the company appears on the platform.
- Another, on indiecampersopiniones.com (8 October 2026), says the return report notes damage to the toilet cassette and that, in their view, the "before" photo shown is the same as the return photo. No amount is given. The automatic classification did not tag this case as a damage charge.
- A customer on Portal da Queixa (May 2026) says they disputed several damage charges and that the company told them on 19 May 2026 that the case was still under investigation; the next day, they say, the amount was taken from their account. No figure is given. Status: unresolved.
- Separately, a complainant on Altroconsumo (22 August 2026) disputes a charge of 3,049.76 euros linked to an engine warning light, and asks for the technical documentation and the calculation. The company replied asking for the booking code.
Summary of amounts according to customers: 1,060, 950, 562.77 and 199 euros; two other cases give no figure. Separately, there is the 3,049.76 euro charge linked to the engine warning light. These are amounts stated by customers and have not been verified.
What the company's terms say. In the European rental agreement edited on 6 October 2026 (see terms):
- damage is valued using the company methodology, which the customer accepts on booking (clauses 30.5 and 30.7), and the agreement describes the amounts as standardised, non-negotiable and binding, whether or not the damage is repaired (clause 30.8);
- the time limit for notifying charges is "within a reasonable timeframe" (clause 30.6); its article on post-trip charges says most are notified within 30 days, with exceptions;
- you have 15 days from notification to dispute a charge made after account closing (clause 35.6) and 30 days from the return to make a formal complaint (clause 36.4);
- if you disagree with the assessment, you can ask for an independent quote within 5 working days of receiving the damage report, with all costs borne by you (clauses 30.5.2 and 30.5.2.1).
According to the account closing article (version archived on 12 October 2026), closing usually takes up to 72 hours, the deposit is used first to cover amounts owed and, if the amount exceeds the deposit, the difference is charged to the card. The article on return requirements (version archived on 12 October 2026) says the vehicle is inspected and photographed at the return, and that the deposit is not released on the spot because an internal audit follows. Earlier versions, and those of other dates, may say something different: always quote the one in your own agreement.
Waits and hand-over: 4 of 15 (27%)
Four reviews mention waits or delays at pick-up. A customer on OCU (June 2026) says that, with pick-up booked for 11:30 and an early pick-up service, they waited about two hours, were offered a lower-category manual vehicle instead of the automatic one they had reserved, and the key broke in the rear lock. The company replied on 12 June 2026 that it was reviewing the case. Another customer on Portal da Queixa says check-in took about two hours because of computer system failures, and one on indiecampersopiniones.com (2024) says that after waiting an hour they were offered the vehicle uncleaned; according to the customer, they refused it in that state and received it two hours later, with no water and the grey water not emptied.
Dirty or incomplete vehicle: 4 of 15 (27%)
Several customers describe a lack of cleanliness, incomplete kitchen equipment, a smell in the bathroom or a damaged awning (Altroconsumo, March 2026, Portal da Queixa, May 2026). Some say they noted it at pick-up and that staff told them they would not be held responsible.
Vehicle change: 3 of 15 (20%)
A customer on Altroconsumo (14 September 2026) says that two days before the trip they were told the campervan they had booked was unavailable and were offered a higher-category camper that, they say, they could not drive; they rented another vehicle from a competitor at an extra cost of about 1,800 euros. The company replied on 25 September 2026 that it considered the vehicle offered to be an upgrade. Status: closed.
Deposit and other charges
Two reviews mention deposits held longer than expected (indiecampersopiniones.com, July 2025: according to the customer, the company said it had released the deposit on 7 July, but on 27 July their bank said the hold was still active). Three mention unexpected extra charges (20%). An OCU complaint from 2025 asks for a refund of unused gas after a heating failure; the company replied that its Milan team had found no fault in the heating, that the gas had been used and that it does not refund extras after pick-up; the platform lists it as resolved.
What is valued
None of these 15 reviews contains a positive assessment of the service. That reflects how the sources are built: OCU, Altroconsumo and Portal da Queixa are complaint platforms, and the comments on indiecampersopiniones.com are mostly critical. It cannot be read as meaning that no customer was satisfied. For positive assessments, see the scores in the section above and the Indie Campers reviews summary, which includes more sources.
Trend and the company's replies
- By year of publication: 2024, 2 reviews; 2025, 3; 2026, 10. The rise partly reflects that complaint platforms mostly show recent cases; it does not allow the conclusion that the location has got worse.
- Public reply: in 7 of the 15 (47%) there is at least one reply from the company in the platform's own thread. They usually ask for the booking code, say the case is under review or explain the company's position. In the other 8 no public reply appears.
- Status according to the platform: 4 resolved, 3 ongoing, 2 closed, 2 unresolved and 4 with no data.
Tips before pick-up and at return
- Document the pick-up. Take dated video and photos of the whole exterior, roof, underside, interior and equipment before accepting the vehicle. More tips in our guide to documenting pick-up and return.
- Note everything in the online validation and keep a screenshot of what you send.
- Check what you booked: vehicle category (manual or automatic, size), bedding, kitchen kit, keys.
- If there is a breakdown, report it in writing and keep the time and channel of each contact.
- At the return, ask for an inspection in your presence and photograph the vehicle as you hand it over. If nobody is there, do not leave the vehicle without a written instruction from the company (its agreement forbids unsupervised returns without consent, clause 28.1.1.7), and leave a record with photos and a message. Empty the waste water tanks before arriving: the return article says the depots have no disposal point.
- Watch your account over the following weeks and complain in writing straight away if a charge appears.
If you are charged after the return
Follow our guide to disputing a damage charge. Summary for this location:
- Complain to the company in writing, within the 15 and 30 days in its terms, asking for the damage report, the pick-up and return photos with their dates, and the breakdown of the amount. Check on your invoice which company issues the charge: we have not found it in the company documents we archive.
- Talk to your bank about a chargeback; its deadline runs from the date of the charge.
- If you live in Italy: Altroconsumo handles complaints against companies and publishes Indie Campers' score. The European Consumer Centre in Italy deals with disputes with companies established in another EU country: first check on your invoice which company is charging you.
- If you live in Spain: OCU has a complaints platform and the European Consumer Centre in Spain gives guidance on cross-border disputes.
- European Small Claims Procedure: for cross-border claims of up to 5,000 euros, see the procedure on the e-Justice portal. Find out about costs and requirements first.
- Car rental conciliation (ECRCS): Indie Campers is not on the Leaseurope list we checked on 12 October 2026, so this route is not available for its rentals.
- The EU online dispute resolution platform closed in July 2025 (ECC Finland notice).
